1.2 Who We Are
School Governance is part of North Northamptonshire Council and provides services in the following areas:
- Early Education
- Schools and Education
- Special Educational Needs and Disability
We have a governor support team who support schools in fulfilling the local authority's statutory responsibilities to:
- Appoint parent governor representatives to LA committees dealing with education;
- Appoint LA governors to all maintained school governing bodies;
- Provide training and information for school governors; and
- Set up temporary governing bodies for new maintained schools.
In addition, our Governor Development Advisors work alongside a number of governing boards of maintained schools in a supportive manner; this has reduced the number of schools requiring an Ofsted grade of improvement or inadequate.
2 Information that we hold
2.1 What personal information do we collect to deliver this service?
In the course of delivering these services, we will collect the following information:
- Personal information including your name, email address, telephone number, date of birth, area of county that you live in.
- Attendance at NNC provided training
- Current school appointed to as a governor
- School Governorship history
- School tier preference (eg primary, secondary)
- Governing Body Details
- Governor type and term of office
- Improvement Evaluation Reports
- Details of Governor training booked and attended
3 How the information is obtained
3.1 How do we collect this personal information?

3.2 There are a number of reasons why we need to collect and use your personal information. Generally, we collect and use personal information where it is necessary to meet our legal obligations.

The legislations that govern and direct the delivery of services is as follows:
- Children and Young Persons Act 2008
- Education and Inspections Act 2006
4 What we do with the information
4.1 How we use this personal information?
- To enable service delivery
- To enable official reporting
- To fulfil our statutory duty regarding school governance
- Perform a Statutory Duty
- To enable schools to fill governor vacancies
- To improve governance in schools
- To maintain a governor database
- To send out our regular ‘Governor Newsletter’ to the boards who pay for this service
- To contact governors regarding statutory changes in legislation and details of training opportunities
- To ascertain local authority governor vacancies to be filled (statutory role)
- To assess and report on vacancies across the county
- To plan future training requirements
The information will only be used for the purposes stated when it was collected. Information will not be sold, rented or provided to anyone else, or used for any other purpose than that for which it was originally collected unless required to by law.

Why do we share this information?
In order for the service to fully carry out its legal duties and to deliver its service it is a necessary requirement to share this information.
We will share personal information with law enforcement or other authorities if required by applicable law and in accordance with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
5 How long we keep your information for and how we securely dispose of it after use
5.1 How long will your personal information be held?
We keep your personal information for the purpose of this fulfilling our statutory duty regarding school governance in line with the council’s retention schedules, which can be found here (include hyperlink).

All records relating to the appointment of and reappointment of School Governors Retain from termination of service as a school governor for 6 years
5.2 We will securely dispose of your information in line with retention periods.
6 How we store your information
6.1 Your information is securely stored on the council’s systems in electronic format. The Council’s servers are based in the UK.
