Don’t fancy cooking tonight? No problem, we’ve found a brilliant new small business that has delicious American-style food. If you love smoked, smashed, and slow-cooked meats you’ll love No.1 Smash and Grab because they have dishes to satisfy every appetite and taste!
Based in Burton Latimer, the takeaway business is run by Ashley who has a strong passion for a palate-pleasing barbecue! After launching earlier this year, it has quickly become a popular choice on the town’s dining scene.
Ashley was preparing for a busy evening of orders when we went over to visit. He told us:
I would describe myself as a foodie for sure. I love food and enjoy cooking and experimenting with different flavours, ingredients, and techniques.
I’ve always loved barbecues, and like hosting these for friends and family who rate my cooking quite highly! Great food can really bring people together, and I love giving people new tastes to try. It was the positive feedback I kept getting about the smoked, smashed, and slow-cooked meats I was serving that got me thinking about setting up my own takeaway business.
There are lots of takeaways around, but I could see there was space in the market and deciding to go for it was a big moment. Behind the scenes there was loads of preparation to get ready as there is a lot involved with setting up a food-based business. I also invested in quality smokers and had specialist equipment installed in my kitchen.
My children came up with the name which I love! They also help name the menu options, I like to keep them involved, and my wife too. We try and keep the names a bit different and play on words with the meat, for example The Filthy Cow which is a very popular loaded burger!
Once I launched, orders started coming in very fast and with lots of positive online reviews already, I think I must be doing something right. It’s great how it has taken off so well and it’s given me the confidence to think about getting my own takeaway premises in the town, and maybe even a restaurant one day.
On the menu you’ll find a variety of mouth-watering options including tender slow-cooked meats, flavour packed burgers, delicious wraps, loaded fries, and more. I try to cater for every taste and appetite and offer vegetarian options and kid’s meals too. On Saturdays I’ve introduced specials which are proving very popular, I’m always thinking of what I can do next.
I also offer a selection of desserts in collaboration with Desborough-based business, Treat Box. The desserts they provide are truly delicious, it’s great working together and supporting each other in this way.
As a busy dad, and owner of a decorating company, it can be stressful at times! But I love working for myself and wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve implemented a slick ordering system to make sure I don’t get overloaded, and I have delivery drivers too who deliver within a four-mile radius, although we can be a little flexible, just ask.
A standout moment for me was getting feedback from new customers who had recently moved to the area from London. They said the food was better than the smoke house restaurants they’d been to in the big city, and it made me feel very proud!
I am very community minded, and I am hosting a big event in August to bring families and people together. I’m going to serve up a special menu, set up fun activities and games for everyone to take part in, and invite other local traders to join in too. Events like this are a great way to meet people, try new things and discover other businesses in the area. I’ll be sharing news of this soon so watch this space!
