In Bloom – Rushden

Love is in the air, and with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there has never been a better time to fall in love with your High Street and support your local businesses.

Preparations are in full swing including at In Bloom in Rushden, a wonderful florist that is full of buds, blooms, gifts and more, and you’re greeted with the sweetest scent when you step in the door!

We went over to see business owner Ruth who was busy with customers in the shop and dealing with orders that were coming in thick and fast!

I adore working with flowers and with Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter all coming up, it’s all go, and I love it.

We are prepping orders for Valentine’s Day ready for when the flowers come in. Red roses are always a traditional and popular choice, especially as they symbolise passion and romantic love, and they have a fantastic scent. We also have orders for a variety of other blooms and bespoke bouquets, and we are prepared for last minute requests.

Flowers have always been my passion and I knew from the age of 9 that I wanted to be a florist. My Grandma worked as a florist in Switzerland, and I feel proud that I have followed in her footsteps and am following my dream too. I’ve worked hard to get to where I am today with studying, training and work experience placements including one in Switzerland which was incredible.

My career has seen me gain experience on the wholesale side, travel to Holland and other countries to buy the most beautiful flowers and to source products to bring to the UK, and it was always my ambition to own a floristry business of my own.

After having my children and finding out about a shop becoming available in Rushden town centre, the time was right, and I jumped at the chance. It started out with my mum helping, she’s an incredible support to me and the business, and as we began to bloom, I was proud to be able to take on my first employee Kim who is still here 9 years later!

My proudest purchase is quite funny because it’s the In Bloom fridge! It’s essential to keep the flowers at the optimum temperature for them to look their absolute best and I was excited and ambitious with my fridge order. After it was delivered, we quickly realised it was too big for our little shop! We moved to a bigger premises and are now a team of 4 with Sarah and our delivery driver Ian, it’s a great and supportive team, I don’t know what I’d do without them. It’s hard work but we have a lot of fun along the way, and it’s a very rewarding job.

We meet all sorts of customers here, and we love working with them – we care about them all. There are lots of regulars as well as walk-ins, and because we are online as well, we have customers from all over the world, it’s amazing.

Our motto is that we sell happiness because flowers are very emotive, and they bring a smile – how amazing is that! People buy flowers for many different reasons, for good times and sad times, and sometimes just because. We work with our customers to make sure they get the perfect floral solution and with over 115 five-star Google reviews I know we are doing something right.

We have fresh flower deliveries every day, sourced from all over the world and imported from Holland. I work hard to make the business eco-friendly; our delivery van is electric, and I strive to source sustainable and bio-degradable products, this is something I’m very passionate about.

Flowers are beautiful to work with and we are happiest when we are unpacking orders and making beautiful bespoke bouquets – there is so much you can do with flowers and the opportunities to create are endless.

I’m always learning and enjoy trying out different techniques and giving new trends a go. I love following fashion and bringing popular seasonal colours into bouquets, and I’m so excited for Spring, I think the change of season gives every florist a buzz.

No order is too big or too small, we love a challenge here at In Bloom, and working with different ideas, it’s one of our key strengths and we will put the work in to ensure we have happy and satisfied customers. It is hard work, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

I love getting inspired and am always thinking of ideas to grow the business. I am developing the giftware side to sell in the shop and to add on to flower orders for a lovely, personalised touch. We have a variety of products here as well as the flowers including jewellery, homeware, biscuits, popcorn, and keepsakes, and I’ve recently introduced a garden range which is proving popular.

It can be challenging competing with big national brands and international online flower delivery companies, but by supporting a local florist you are guaranteed exceptional quality, inspirational and unique flowers that have a great impact. By buying local, you also know that every bouquet and display has been made with love and care and is putting money back into your community.
