Hackney carriage and private hire driver licences

Tax checks

You must complete a tax check every time you apply, even if you:

  • renew a licence with us
  • apply for the same type of licence you previously held, that ceased being valid less than a year ago
  • apply to us for the same type of licence you already hold with another licensing authority

If you are also a Private Hire Operator, a separate tax code is required - so one for driver application and one for the operator application.

You must carry out the tax check yourself. You cannot ask a tax agent or adviser to do this on your behalf. The tax check will ask questions about how you pay any tax that may be due on income you earn from your licensed trade. After you have completed the tax check you will be given a 9-character tax check code to include on your application form.

If you are a new applicant, who has never held a driver licence before (or had a licence of the same type but it ceased to be valid a year or more before making this application), you must confirm you are aware of your tax responsibilities as hackney carriage or private hire vehicle driver.

Your application may not be considered if you don't provide a valid tax check code when needing to do so.
