Pets in council properties
Domestic animals including cats, dogs, small birds and fish are allowed in most council homes.
Permission
You should always get permission from us in writing to keep pets (as some properties aren't suitable) by emailing us:
- Kettering area: [email protected]
- Corby area: [email protected]
If you live in a flat or maisonette, you must not keep pets like dogs or cats unless you have a private garden which is kept neat and tidy with suitable fencing.
We need to check your property is suitable for pets and won't cause a nuisance to your neighbours.
Email us if you already have a pet, but didn't get permission. We will consider all reasonable requests.
If we withdraw permission or you are denied permission, you will be granted a reasonable period to re-home your pet.
Breeding
You must not use your home, gardens or outbuildings for breeding animals.
We know that some pets will have litters - but you are not allowed to breed for profit or sale on a regular basis, as this could be a nuisance to your neighbours.
If there are complaints, we may ask you to reduce the numbers of pets that you have staying with you.
Unusual pets
We discourage keeping exotic pets, snakes, birds, amphibians, insects and spiders.
Ideally, we'd prefer you only keep domestic animals, birds, fish or small mammals.
Complaints
If we get a complaint, we will investigate and if it's valid, you will be asked to ensure that the problem is sorted out.
This may include working with our Environmental team.
