Disabled adaptations for council houses

Apply for a disabled adaptation

Eligibility

We have a limited budget so we need to make sure that any work is recommended by our Occupational Therapy service and that the work is reasonable.

We also have a legal duty to make the best use of our properties and the public money we spend on them.

We won't complete any work recommended in the following situations:

  • you are in the process of buying your council property
  • you are considering transferring to another council property
  • you have applied to exchange with another council tenant

We won't install:

  • floor draining showers to first floor (or higher) flats or maisonettes
  • stairlifts on narrow staircases which would impede access in the event of a fire
  • level access showers where plumbing and drainage services can't accommodate it

Apply

For all minor or major adaptations, you will need to complete a referral to the Occupational Therapy service. The Occupational Therapist will assess your needs and provide us with a report recommending any required adaptations.

We will then contact you and carry out an assessment of your property.

The Occupational Therapy service will usually contact you within 5 working days. Waiting times will depend on whether your needs are assessed as critical, urgent, or standard.

Typically, there is a wait of 6 to 9 months for complex adaptations, but this can be longer.
