Disabled adaptations for council houses
Contents
Apply for a disabled adaptation
Eligibility
We have a limited budget so we need to make sure that any work is recommended by our Occupational Therapy service and that the work is reasonable.
We also have a legal duty to make the best use of our properties and the public money we spend on them.
We won't complete any work recommended in the following situations:
- you are in the process of buying your council property
- you are considering transferring to another council property
- you have applied to exchange with another council tenant
We won't install:
- floor draining showers to first floor (or higher) flats or maisonettes
- stairlifts on narrow staircases which would impede access in the event of a fire
- level access showers where plumbing and drainage services can't accommodate it

For all minor or major adaptations, you will need to complete a referral to the Occupational Therapy service. The Occupational Therapist will assess your needs and provide us with a report recommending any required adaptations.
We will then contact you and carry out an assessment of your property.
The Occupational Therapy service will usually contact you within 5 working days. Waiting times will depend on whether your needs are assessed as critical, urgent, or standard.
Typically, there is a wait of 6 to 9 months for complex adaptations, but this can be longer.
