Damp, condensation and mould can be a problem in any home if not dealt with early. Left untreated, it could affect your health and damage your home.
You can take a variety of actions to reduce condensation and moisture. As a landlord, we want to keep homes safe, warm and dry and we have a responsibility to do this under the law.

Ventilate - Keep air moving
- Open windows for short periods each day, especially in kitchens and bathrooms
- Use extractor fans if fitted
- Don’t block air vents – they help your home to breathe

Keep your home warm
- Try to maintain a steady temperature in all rooms during colder months
- Use low-level heating if needed, rather than allowing rooms to become cold and damp
- Keep doors closed to hold warmth where it is needed

Reduce moisture and condensation
- Cover pans when cooking
- Wipe away condensation from windows and sills
- Dry clothes outside when you can or use a vented tumble dryer
- If drying indoors, place clothes in a well-ventilated room and avoid radiators

Check problem spots
- Look behind furniture and wardrobes for early signs of mould
- Leave a small gap between furniture and external walls to improve airflow
- Clean away mould with suitable HSE-approved products - never dry-brush it, as this spreads spores
