Disabled adaptations for council houses

Assessment, review and waiting list for adaptations

Assessment

After applying, our Occupational Therapy team will phone you to take some more details and decide if you are eligible for a full assessment.

If eligible, they will make an appointment and visit you to assess all your health and mobility needs and make a recommendation of what aids and adaptations could help you live a more comfortable and independent life in your current home.

The recommendation will be sent directly to us and given a priority according to the urgency based on your health needs.

Although there is no legal duty for the us to act upon the recommendation, we consider it our duty to help tenants with special needs and will respond in line with our agreed policy.

Review

After we receive their report, we will contact you within 10 working days. We will confirm what aids and adaptations have been recommended.

We will then need to find out if the property is suitable for the recommended adaptations - this could mean a feasibility survey needs to be carried out.

We must also decide if the work needed is reasonable and practical, and that funding is available.

You will receive an update from us verbally as your application progresses.

If we agree to complete major or high-cost works outlined in the recommendations, you will need to sign a statement agreeing to the work and to respect and look after the adaptations.

Waiting list

At this point you will be placed on the waiting list.

Work is prioritised by our Occupational Therapy service as standard, urgent or critical.

We complete all work within the priority recommended and in date order.

Typically, there is a wait of 6 to 9 months for complex adaptations, but this can be longer. Minor works can be completed in a much shorter timescale.
