What goes in which bin

Other waste

Asbestos

We recommend that you use a registered contractor to remove asbestos. Small quantities of bonded asbestos (from household maintenance and repairs) can be taken to the waste transfer station in Northampton by booking in advance.

Batteries

Batteries must be disposed of in battery recycling points in shops and supermarkets, or taken to our Household Waste Recycling Centres, as they can spark fires in bins and waste trucks:

Fire caused by batteries

When this happens, we take emergency action, empty waste onto the highway and get the fire put out. Before you place a battery into your bin, please consider that:

  • the lives of crew and residents can be put in danger
  • roads are blocked causing traffic problems
  • the Fire Service may need to help, stopping them from getting to other incidents
  • cleansing teams need to support our crews instead of dealing with other issues
  • there is a cost to the taxpayer

Lightbulbs

Lightbulbs, particularly fluorescent, should be taken to your local household waste recycling centre.

Electrical items

An electrical item collection scheme is operated in the East Northamptonshire area only. Please leave any items for collection in a carrier bag by your wheeled bin on either your refuse or recycling collection day. These items will be loaded into a cage fitted to the regular collection vehicles.

These items go through an intensive recycling process.

The service is for small household electrical items only. The carrier bag is a size indicator - if it fits in that it will fit in the vehicle's collection cage.

These include:

  • Hairdryers, hair straighteners, shavers, electric toothbrushes
  • Kitchen appliances such as toasters, kettles, hand blenders
  • DVD and CD Players, radios, MP3 players and remote controls
  • Clocks, watches, calculators and torches
  • Kettles
  • Telephones, cameras
  • Laptops
  • Small electrical DIY tools such as drills and electric screwdrivers
  • Toys (remote control car or drone)
  • Chargers

Items should still have the cables attached and all batteries removed and disposed of as described above.

Other waste

Please check if your local household waste recycling centre can take other waste, particularly if it may be hazardous.
