Asbestos disposal
Asbestos and asbestos bonded materials cannot be disposed of at any of our recycling centres.
Asbestos is a dangerous substance that can cause severe respiratory illness and must be disposed of with care. Asbestos was extensively used in buildings built during the first part of the last century.
If you discover asbestos or asbestos bonded materials in your home during building work or DIY activities the general advice is to leave it alone. If the material is damaged or you have to remove it, you must make arrangements for its safe removal and disposal.
Asbestos removal companies
You can hire a licensed, specialist company to remove and/or dispose of the asbestos for you. Such companies advertise locally or online.
Asbestos disposal scheme for householders
Alternatively small quantities of ‘bonded asbestos’, arising from household maintenance and repairs, can be taken by you, the householder, to our waste transfer station operated by Suez, located on the Brackmills Industrial Estate (Liliput Road) in Northampton under the Asbestos Disposal Scheme:

Before your visit
Please telephone 01213 332118 prior to your visit to ensure the site has the capacity to receive asbestos. If you do not make contact with the site prior to arrival, they may refuse to accept your waste.
This scheme is only available for asbestos removed by you from your own home and not for trade waste which includes asbestos you have paid to have removed from your home.
Depending on the type of asbestos, a charge may be incurred.
Only one trip per household is permitted.
There are strict guidelines regarding this procedure, the amounts of asbestos waste that can be handled in this way and the way in which it is presented. Waste will not be accepted if it does not fall within these guidelines.
Preparing the asbestos
Each individual bonded asbestos sheet/pipe must be wrapped in clear thick gauge polythene sheeting (available from DIY stores) and sealed with tape to prevent the release of dust (maximum length per piece = 1.8 metres).
If you have more than the maximum acceptable quantities shown below, then each additional sheet will be charged at the commercial rate.
You may wish to ring alternative companies to get quotes for the disposal of your asbestos.
