Household chemical disposal

Service update

We are temporarily limiting the number of fridges and freezers accepted at the HWRCs, because a fire at a national recycling facility has reduced disposal capacity.

Only one domestic unit can be brought per visit to the recycling centre and I.D will be checked to ensure it has come from a North Northamptonshire residence.

If you have more than one fridge or freezer to dispose of, you are advised to use a licensed waste disposal company until normal service resumes. The council apologises for the inconvenience and appreciates your patience.

Our HWRCs offer safe disposal of small quantities of hazardous household chemicals (those available for domestic purchase over the counter at supermarkets or DIY stores only) including:

  • white spirit
  • oven cleaners
  • weed killers
  • insecticides
  • lubricants
  • drain cleaners

These are usually identified by a black and orange hazardous symbol on the packaging or bottle.

Original container

Household chemicals can be harmful (i.e. flammable, corrosive or toxic), so any chemicals brought to the HWRC must be in their original container and:

  • clearly identifiable
  • labelled
  • suitably sealed

Unidentifiable chemicals will not be accepted.

At the HWRC

A maximum of 5 litres is accepted per month.

On arrival, report to site staff with items.
