Energy grants and support

Energy Bills Support Scheme

Those without a direct relationship to an energy supplier (such as care home or park home residents) will be able to apply to the government for £400 of non-repayable help with their fuel bills.

The government is also providing a further £200 Alternative Fuel Payment (AFP) to help households who use alternative fuels such as biomass or heating oil to meet energy costs.

  • The household is the main or only home address of the person to receive the support
  • The resident or applicant is responsible for paying the household energy bill. This means either directly or as part of a service charge, rent, or other arrangement (and may have the impact of increased energy bills costs passed on to them between 1 October 2022 and 31 March 2023)
  • The household is not already receiving EBSS payments in whole or in part
  • The household is not a business premises or other form of non-domestic premises. It must be used solely or mainly for domestic purposes (except for businesses whose main business activity is to provide long term residential accommodation, such as landlords)

Alternative Fuel Payment

A further £200 Alternative Fuel Payment (AFP) is being provided to help households who use alternative fuels such as biomass or heating oil to meet energy costs this winter.

Most households eligible for the AFP support will receive payment automatically from their electricity supplier in February, with no action needed.

Households who will need to apply for the AFP, for example because they do not have a relationship with an electricity supplier, will be able to do so in February through the same GOV.UK portal as the one that will be used to apply for support under the EBSS.

The government are setting up a helpline to deal with any queries for their scheme.

The scheme launches in early 2023 and applications will be made directly through the GOV.UK website.

If you're eligible, your details will be shared with us to confirm your home address and make the payment.
