Transferring grave ownership

When purchasing an exclusive right of burial (the right to be buried within the grave), the time period of this right is for 99 years.

The land ownership remains with North Northamptonshire Council.

A copy of the deeds will be sent out and this proves ownership of the grave.

When the owner passes away, they have an automatic right to be buried within the grave space and a transfer of ownership will need to be completed after the interment has taken place.

If the grave is to be opened at any point, the written permission of the owner of the exclusive right must be obtained before the interment can take place.

The charge for exclusive rights of burial includes the cost of maintaining your grave and the cemetery grounds. Prices are available on our fees and charges booklet.
