Fly-tipping

Contents

Fly-tipping

Flytipping is the illegal dumping of waste. It can be anything from domestic items such as fridges, sofas and mattresses to garden waste, tyres and construction waste. It can carry a fine of up to £50,000 and six months imprisonment.

If the waste has been fly-tipped on private land, you may be able to apply for a grant to help remove the waste and protect the land in future.

Paying someone to remove your waste

If you are paying for someone to remove and dispose of your waste, you are still responsible. Make sure you use a reputable company that has a waste carriers licence. You can check the Environment Agency's register of licenced carriers.

Seeing someone fly-tipping

We recommend that you do not approach them in order to avoid a conflict situation. You can still help us by taking the following details:

  • Time and date of the incident
  • Location of the incident
  • Description of the people involved (e.g. sex, height, age, build, etc)
  • Description of the vehicle used (registration number, make and model, colour)
  • Description of the waste being tipped (quantity and type of waste)

This information can be used to bring forward a prosecution case against the people involved in the incident.
