Works planned to futureproof roads in North Northants
Roads and paths26 June 2026

North Northamptonshire Council will utilise a traditionally quieter time on the local area’s roads to undertake several essential road projects.
With schools breaking up for the summer holidays, the area’s roads usually see less traffic and the council have planned works for July and August to maximise efficiency and reduce impact on motorists.
A6 Irthlingborough viaduct works
Following successful investigation works, a further full 24/7 road closure is planned from Friday 31 July (8pm) to Monday 10 August (6am).
During this closure, the Highways team will:
- Remove the existing surfacing and re- waterproof a section of the bridge deck
- Carry out concrete repairs where required
- Apply a new spray-applied waterproofing system
This process is weather dependent and must take place in dry conditions.
To minimise the disruption and avoid further closures, additional works will be carried out within the same closure. These will include:
- Signal improvement works to Station Road
- Routine maintenance works including gully cleansing, patching, carriageway cleansing, sweeping, and litter picking
- An inspection of the bridge, which is undertaken every six years and involves a specialist team
A6003 - between Oakley Roundabout and the A43 Geddington bypass
From Monday 27 July to Friday 31 July (between 9:30am - 3:30pm), works will take place along this section of the A6003 on one coordinated programme, including:
- Street cleansing
- Adjustment to ironworks
- Repairs to laybys
- Vegetation clearance
- Litter picking
Pytchley Road, Kettering
Full resurfacing works will take place to improve the condition and lifespan of this well used road in Kettering from 25 July to 21 August 2026 (between 9:30am - 3:30pm, Monday to Friday).
Work will be completed in phases and North Northamptonshire Council are working with local bus companies to minimise disruption on bus routes.
Due to high traffic volumes and its proximity to Wicksteed Park, the works are being carefully managed.
Advance signage and diversion routes will be in place, including guidance for visitors using alternative routes where needed.
Blackpot Lane, Oundle
This scheme will improve traffic flow and safety through changes to the road layout and supporting infrastructure, helping to reduce congestion along this tight route.
Works will take place on 11 August from 8am - 5pm.
Bridge Street, Thrapston
Works to refurbish the traffic lights on the bridge will take place between 20 July and 31 July 2026 (between 9:30am - 3:30pm, Monday to Friday).
We know roadworks at any time are disruptive for motorists which is why we always try to plan larger scale works for traditionally quieter times.Cllr Chris McGiffen, the council’s Executive Member for Highways and Travel
Through close coordination and forward planning, we have been able to manage these projects to ensure that multiple activities can be delivered effectively. This includes working during off-peak hours and using the right traffic management for the works.
I would still encourage motorists to plan ahead, follow any diversion routes and be patient whilst we undertake these vital works.
I hope residents and motorists are starting to see real improvements on many stretches of roads across North Northamptonshire and this programme of works across the summer is the next step.Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of the Council
We know there is so much more to do, but we are committed to proper repairs, planned maintenance and an improved quality of work.
Details about all planned works in North Northamptonshire are available on the council’s website.
