Youth Parliament Members and the role

North Northamptonshire has two elected Members of Youth Parliament who work alongside other young people from Northamptonshire who are elected as MYPs in West Northants. 

North Northamptonshire also appoints two Deputy Members of Youth Parliament (DMYP,) who are elected from the Youth Advisory Council to support the work of the MYPs.

The role of the Members of Youth Parliament is to speak up for, and on behalf of young people in North Northamptonshire at a local and national level by:

  • identifying and tackling issues considered important by young people 
  • helping to make sure that young people’s voices shape services and facilities locally and nationally, to reflect what young people want and need
  • seeking the views of young people and promoting opportunities to get involved in the democratic process and have their say
  • supporting and promoting the work of UK Youth Parliament and the North Northamptonshire Youth Advisory Council through local and national initiatives

North Northamptonshire Youth Parliament Members are supported by the Council’s Engagement and Participation Team.

Engage

  • Support youth voice and actively engage in their constituency. Meet regularly with other youth councils, forums, and organisations in their area
  • Participate in UK Youth Parliament meetings, events, activities, and consultations
  • Engage in local, national and regional campaigns

Promote 

  • Promote the positive work of UK Youth Parliament
  • Report UK Youth Parliament's work back to their constituency
  • Communicate to the media as appropriate and under UK Youth Parliament media guidelines

Represent 

  • Speak on behalf of their constituents
  • Encourage and support other young people in their area to engage in UK Youth Parliament activities
  • Take the views of their constituents to UK Youth Parliament sittings
  • Take part in votes on national policy and campaigns priority

Time commitment  

An MYPs term in office will last for one year. On average, you will need to spend between one and five hours per week on UK Youth Parliament activities.

National MYP meetings

National meeting dates will be confirmed soon.

During a campaign period (24 April to 3 May 2026) you can submit a manifesto for other young people to vote on if you would like to stand as a candidate.

To vote, the young person needs to be aged between 11 to 18 years. 

​As voters, you will have access to the online copies of all Manifestos and can vote using a unique access code, during a campaign and election period.

When a voting campaign is open access codes are available from schools, colleges, local libraries or and Family Hubs. Codes can also be obtained by emailing [email protected].

All votes generated during an election period will be counted at the end of the voting period and the 2 young people who have received the most votes (first past the post), will be elected as the North Northamptonshire Members of Youth Parliament.
