North Northamptonshire Council Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984
North Northamptonshire Council (A6 Irthlingborough Road, Finedon) (40 miles per hour speed limit) Order 2026
Statement of Reasons
North Northamptonshire Council proposes to make the above Order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to introduce a 40 miles per hour speed limit on the A6 Irthlingborough Road, Finedon.
The proposed speed limit is intended to act as an intermediate speed buffer between the national speed limit and the existing 30 mph restricted area, in order to achieve a clearer and more gradual reduction in vehicle speed.
The reasons for the proposed Order are as follows:
- To improve road safety for all road users by reducing vehicle speeds to a level more appropriate to the character, layout, and function of this section of road.
- To promote more consistent vehicle speeds, reducing sudden braking and acceleration associated with transitions from higher speed limits to 30 mph, thereby creating safer driving conditions.
- To assist drivers in adjusting to changing road conditions, particularly in proximity to junctions, development, and areas of increased pedestrian and vehicle activity.
- To facilitate the safe and efficient movement of traffic, in accordance with the council’s duties under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
The council considers that the introduction of a 40 mph speed limit at this location is necessary, proportionate, and appropriate, and will contribute to improved safety, compliance, and overall traffic management.
