Statement of reasons 2084

North Northamptonshire Council Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984

North Northamptonshire Council (A6, Burton Latimer to Finedon) (50 miles per hour speed limit) Order 2025

Statement of reasons

North Northamptonshire Council proposes to make the above Order under Section 84 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

The purpose of the Order is to introduce a 50 miles per hour speed limit on a section of the A6 between Burton Latimer and Finedon.

This measure is considered necessary for the following reasons:

  • To avoid danger to persons or other road users, or to prevent the likelihood of such danger arising, particularly due to changes in road geometry, increased traffic volumes, and historic collision data
  • To preserve or improve the amenities of the area by reducing vehicle speeds, which can contribute to lower noise levels and environmental impacts
  • To maintain consistency in speed limits along adjacent sections of the A6 and ensure they reflect the road layout, surrounding land use, and proximity to junctions and development access points
  • To support the council’s wider duty to promote safe and efficient movement on the highway network, especially at transition points between rural and more developed areas

This proposal forms part of the council’s ongoing speed limit review programme, which seeks to enhance road safety while maintaining appropriate traffic flow and responding to changing highway conditions.
