Temporary road closure for community events

This type of temporary road closures is for community events where local residents and their families are the main attendees. The event should not be advertised to people outside the area.

Requirements

Temporary road closures are intended for small residential streets where the closure won't disrupt much through traffic. Roads that are part of a bus route aren't suitable.

The event must be organised in such a way that access for pedestrians and emergency or essential vehicles can be maintained.

Pre-application check

Check a temporary road closure is suitable for the type of road or event before applying. Contact our Regulations team on 01933 202149 or email [email protected] to discuss your needs before applying.

Consulting residents and businesses

You are responsible for consulting with all locally affected residents and businesses. All properties which front on the road that is closed, both residential and commercial, must be individually informed in writing and any subsequent objections should be resolved by the applicant. Any unresolved objections are unfortunately likely to result in the application being refused.  A copy of the notification to all the properties must be included with your application.

Apply

You will need to include the:

  • road name and section of the road you wish to be closed
  • date of closure including start and finish time
  • nature of event
  • number of people expected to attend
  • purpose of the closure

Next steps

Closure details will be forwarded to a number of statutory consultees, such as emergency services etc. If any of them have concerns that cannot be resolved, the application will be refused.

If the road closure is approved, you will be sent a notice which must be put up at each end of the closure at least 7 days prior to the street party.

Day of road closure

A minimum of one “Road Closed” sign at each entry to the closure will need to be provided by the organisers of the event.

All equipment and rubbish associated with the closure must be cleared at the end of the event– this cannot wait until the following morning.

We ask that you respect your neighbours and keep noise to a minimum after 9pm.
