Scaffolding licence

Christmas Embargo

During the Christmas Embargo between 31 November 2026 and 2 January 2027 no skip or scaffold licence will be permitted on the traffic sensitive/strategic network, major routes into the town centres and town centre roads.

This has been introduced to keep pedestrians safe and to help drivers in the run-up to the Christmas and New Year period.

All scaffolding companies requiring a licence can apply online.

If you are a member of the public you cannot apply directly to the council for a scaffolding licence. You will need to contact a local scaffolding company who will do this on your behalf.

On the highway

If you require scaffolding to be placed on any part of the highway (this may be the footway, verge or the edge of the carriageway), the scaffolding company will need to apply to the council for the necessary licence.

If you are unsure the selected scaffolding company will complete the appropriate checks before they proceed with your request.

Lights and traffic cones

If the scaffolding is placed on the highway, lights will be needed and possibly traffic cones. These will be supplied and maintained by the scaffolding company as part of the conditions when the licence is granted.

Cost

The licence fee to the scaffolding company is dependent on the overall length of the scaffolding as follows:

Length of scaffoldNew Licence fee
less than 5m£94 per month
5m to 9m£151 per month
10m to 19m£192 per month
Each additional 20m£55 per month

You have the scaffolding for as long as you need it.

An extension to the licence can be obtained by your chosen scaffolding company. They will contact us to arrange the extension on your behalf.

Location

Sometimes the proposed location is not suitable in which case the application will not be approved.
