Council tax recovery

Direct debits

We're updating our council tax account numbers as we merge systems from 4 into 1. When we do this, we will update your direct debit details automatically:

  • you won't need to take action
  • the date the direct debit is taken won't change
  • the amount won't change

We've recently updated council tax accounts in the Kettering area and sent letters which will provide full information.

Liability orders

Where the Magistrates’ Court has granted a liability order for non-payment of council tax, it allows the Council a number of legal powers to collect the debt.

A liability order gives the council powers to collect the debt in various ways. At this stage, we may still agree on a special payment with you rather than use the liability order. If you break the arrangement, we will take further action.

Providing information

If we have a liability order, we will ask you to provide information about your employment and income.

After court, you may be sent a request for information about your employment and income details, which you must provide within 14 days.

This information will help the Council look at your financial circumstances and decide how to collect your outstanding council tax.

If your area isn't listed, you may be a resident of West Northamptonshire.
