Camino Project

The Camino Project

As a result of the growing interest in the Spanish Pilgrimage trail, the Camino de Santiago, the extension of the Camino Inglés through England is a walking route which comes through North Northamptonshire, linking historic places of worship and idyllic countryside. This section is part of a larger trail between Durham and Southampton, connecting to the path in Northern Spain and tracing back the steps of the ancient pilgrims who came from Northern Europe with the aim of reaching Santiago, Spain.

The route also draws on the heritage of the Queen Eleanor Crosses Way, giving walkers a sense of journeying through centuries of pilgrimage, not just a countryside ramble, but a route with spiritual meaning.

Walkers taking on Camino routes in Europe have created lasting demand for services along the way: places to eat, rest, sleep, and to have a pilgrim's passport stamped as proof of the journey.

Why this matters for you

Camino routes are known for bringing a steady, reliable flow of visitors who spend money locally and often return. Walkers need:

  • food and drink - breakfasts, packed lunches, and evening meals
  • rest stops - cafés, farm shops and tea rooms along the way
  • accommodation - campsites, pub rooms, B&Bs, and glamping
  • pilgrim passport stamps - a small, low-cost gesture that becomes part of the pilgrim experience and a reason to stop at your business or church

How you can get involved

  • Offer a pilgrim passport stamp at your counter, bar or church door
  • Let us list your business (refreshment, parish or accommodation) on the printed and online route guide
  • Consider a small pilgrim discount or a simple ‘pilgrim menu’ (soup, bread, a hot drink)
  • Host route information or leaflets for walkers to pick up
  • Try getting involved and explore the local adventures that the Camino will take you on
