Works to improve safety at A6 junction start
Highways major projects, plans and strategies21 July 2025

North Northamptonshire Council, working with Kier, have started work on a project designed to improve pedestrian and traffic safety at a busy junction on the A6 in Burton Latimer.
From today, Monday 21 July, through to Monday 22 September, improvement works will take place on Higham Road in Burton Latimer with resurfacing and the installation of new traffic signals.
The works will be split into two phases:
- Phase A - Monday 21 July to Friday 29 August. Higham Road closed and two-way temporary traffic lights in place 24 hours a day on the A6 along the Burton Latimer/Higham Ferrers interchange
- Phase B - Friday 29 August to Monday 22 September. Higham Road will remain closed, with two-way traffic lights on the A6 only during the hours of 8am - 5pm. Outside of these hours, the A6 will remain open.
A temporary speed reduction will be in place, reducing the speed from 60mph to 30mph and drivers are advised to allow extra time for travel.
Once complete, this work will make a significant difference to this particular stretch of the A6 - improving safety for all users.Cllr Chris McGiffen, North Northamptonshire Council’s Executive member for Highways and Travel
We understand that any disruption can be frustrating, but the long-term benefits will outweigh the short-term delays.
Road safety is something that comes up time and time again when speaking to residents and we appreciate residents’ patience and co-operation as these works are carried out.
The start of this project is welcome news. The condition and safety along this stretch of the A6 has been a long-standing issue, which has been problematic for road users for many years and something that has been continuously raised since the beginning of this council.Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council
Going forward, we are determined to improve the roads in North Northamptonshire over the next four years and beyond.
The improvement works along the A6 are part of the Safer Roads Fund, a road safety initiative for local authorities funded by the Department of Transport.
The above works schedule is subject to weather conditions and any changes will be communicated as soon as possible.
