Council re-signs Armed Forces Covenant
Communities18 July 2024

To coincide Armed Forces Week, at the end of June, representatives from North Northamptonshire Council (NNC) alongside the Lord-Lieutenant of Northamptonshire have re-signed a nationally recognised document, the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC). This reaffirms the council’s pledge to continue to support members of the Armed Forces across North Northamptonshire.
The AFC is a commitment that the council acknowledge and understand that those who serve, or have service, in the Armed Forces and their families should be treated with fairness and respect in all aspects of their life.
Recognising the unique obligations of, and sacrifices made by, the Armed Forces, its two principles are that:
- Those who serve in the Armed Forces, whether Regular or Reserve, those who have served in the past, and their families, should face no disadvantage compared to other citizens in the provision of public and commercial services.
- Special consideration is appropriate in some cases, especially for those who have given most, such as the injured and the bereaved.
North Northamptonshire Council are fully committed to supporting the Armed Forces Community and want to continue to work closely with partners to help develop links to support the Armed Forces community across the local area.Cllr Helen Howell, Deputy Leader of North Northamptonshire Council, re-signed the Covenant on behalf of the council
By re-signing the Covenant, we reconfirm this commitment and are also introducing some new pledges, including supporting staff internally who are part of the Armed Forces community.
It was with great pleasure that I was asked to conduct the signing and take part in the flag raising. I would like to thank the council and officers for arranging this event, this is a historic occasion for North Northamptonshire Council as they officially re-pledged their support to our military, veterans, cadet forces and their families. Across Armed Forces Week, we saw some fantastic events in and around the county included in Corby.Northamptonshire RFCA chairman, Jim Wright
I have been working with the AFC team for some time and admire their commitment and dedication to our armed forces and their pledge to the AFC. The council continue to show solid and continued support to the armed forces community and are already demonstrating their commitment they have in place as well as advocating their support within the council and beyond.
Members of the Armed Forces community bring such a rich level of knowledge and experience to North Northants, which can bring considerable benefits. So it is important that we support and work with them and I am really proud that we have re-affirmed our commitment.Cllr Mark Rowley, the council’s Executive Member for Housing, Communities and Levelling Up and Armed Forces Covenant champion
Re-signing the Covenant is more than just a piece of paper. Our actions speak for themselves and 365 days a year, teams across the council are supporting ex and current service personnel in any way we can.Jason Smithers, Leader of the Council
One example of this is the new housing development at Cheltenham Road, in Corby. It has 18 new homes that have been designed with members of the Armed Forces in mind and will be a great asset to the area, when complete.
As part of Corby’s first Sustainable Urban Extension, the Cheltenham Road development integrates with the existing community and infrastructure. Work is almost complete and will be accepting its new Armed Forces Community very soon.
More information about Cheltenham Road is available and further updates will be published in the coming months.
