Additional road closures planned for essential works on the A6
Roads and paths18 May 2026

North Northamptonshire Council is advising motorists of essential roadworks taking place along the A6 at Irthlingborough viaduct later this month, which will require full weekend road closure to allow critical maintenance to be carried out safely.
The works are part of a programme to re-waterproof a section of Irthlingborough viaduct.
Previous work on the viaduct took place as planned on Friday 8 May 2026. But during this initial construction phase, the team identified unexpected challenges where the concrete deck was in considerably poorer condition than previously revealed during trial hole investigations. This unforeseen circumstance means the original scope of works has been revised to ensure the longevity of the viaduct and carriageway improvements.
As a result, further site works will need to be undertaken to fully assess the area on the below dates:
- Full closure from Friday 29 May 2026, 8pm to Monday 1 June, 6am
- Contingency closure - Monday 1 June, 8pm to Tuesday 2 June, 6am
To minimise disruption, the works have been scheduled over the weekend.
The comprehensive re-waterproofing works are now planned for Summer 2026 and updates will be provided in due course.
We appreciate drivers’ patience whilst we address these issues and remain committed to delivering a safe and durable solution that ensure this stretch is fit-for-purpose for many years to come.Cllr Chris McGiffen, the council’s Executive Member for Highways and Travel
I appreciate this additional closure is frustrating for drivers and I would ask that everyone remains patient with us whilst we resolve this ongoing problem.Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council
Any changes to works will be published on the North Northants Highways Facebook page.
