Childcare sufficiency assessment

North Northamptonshire Council undertakes an annual assessment of childcare sufficiency to understand the availability of childcare places and identify any gaps in provision across the area.

Summary of Findings

The assessment indicates that the local childcare market remains relatively stable, with a diverse range of providers delivering early education and childcare across the maintained, private, voluntary and independent sectors. Families can access funded early education entitlements and childcare within a reasonable distance of their home.  

Demand for childcare has increased in response to population changes, parental employment trends and the expansion of childcare entitlements. Whilst there is sufficient provision in many areas, some areas will need to adapt to the changing demands by looking at ways to increase their intake of younger children as well as reviewing their funding models to ensure they are as flexible as they can be for their communities.  

The assessment highlights some challenges affecting the sustainability and capacity of the childcare sector. Providers continue to report difficulties recruiting and retaining qualified staff, rising operational costs and increasing demand for more flexible childcare arrangements. These factors have the potential to impact future childcare sufficiency if not addressed through ongoing support and targeted interventions. 

The quality of childcare provision across the area remains strong, with most settings judged Good or Outstanding. High-quality early years experiences contribute positively to children's development, school readiness and long-term outcomes. Continued partnership working between the Local Authority, providers, schools and other stakeholders will be critical in maintaining quality whilst supporting market sustainability. 

The Local Authority will continue to work collaboratively with providers, schools, employers and partner agencies to support a sustainable childcare market that meets the needs of children and families. Through ongoing market monitoring and business support and training, the Authority aims to ensure that sufficient, high-quality and inclusive childcare remains available across the area. 

In conclusion, whilst the childcare market is generally sufficient and performing well, there are identifiable areas of pressure that require ongoing attention. The findings of this assessment will inform strategic planning and targeted interventions over the coming years to ensure that all families can access the childcare they need to support children's development, parental employment and economic growth.  

There are currently no areas within North Northamptonshire experiencing significant sufficiency challenges. However, this will continue to be closely monitored, as increased uptake of funded childcare places and future housing developments may impact the availability of provision.
