Sheltered housing in Corby and Kettering

Sheltered housing is accommodation for older adults - typically over the age of 55 or 60 - who want to live independently while having access to support and assistance when needed.

Video - Sheltered housing

This is in self-contained flats or bungalows, some of which are located within a scheme that includes communal facilities such as a laundry or a communal lounge.

In all sheltered housing, you will have your own front door. In some schemes, there is also a door entry system at the main entrance. These schemes use fob access to enter the main door. The entry system in your property will allow you to open the main front door without leaving your home.

Our handbook provides information on a wide range of issues such as paying your rent, repairs and maintenance, neighbour relations, tenant involvement, and who you need to call if you want to request a particular service:

Help and support

  • Access to a sheltered services officer Monday to Friday
  • Peace of mind through 24-hour support from a sheltered services officer and an out-of-hours emergency contact and response centre
  • Respect for your independence
  • Advice about other agencies and services who may be able to support you

Sheltered services officers are not carers - they provide housing-related support to enable tenants to live independently with privacy, dignity, security and fulfilment.

Sheltered services officers can support your overall well-being and help you remain independent in your own home.

This could include:

  • helping to maximise your benefit entitlement, including assistance with completing applications
  • supporting you to develop budgeting skills
  • helping you to access physical and mental health services, social care, and occupational health—including completing referrals
  • assisting you to develop or maintain domestic, life and social skills

They do not carry out tasks such as:

  • shopping or collecting prescriptions
  • handling cash or accepting payments
  • cleaning or laundry
  • personal or medical care - but they can help you to arrange these services by signposting or contacting relevant agencies on your behalf

Costs

In addition to your rent, all sheltered housing properties include service charges. These charges cover services you share with others, including:

  • communal lighting and heating
  • laundry facilities
  • caretaking and cleaning services
  • door entry systems

Service charges vary by scheme depending on the facilities available. However, all tenants pay a charge for the alarm service and the sheltered housing team who respond in an emergency.

You will receive an annual service charge breakdown each April.

Pets

Most sheltered housing properties are not suitable for pets due to shared facilities and the absence of private gardens.

Lifeline

Our Lifeline personal alarms are designed to provide support for those wishing to remain living independently within their own home. Help is available 24-hours a day, 365 days of the year.
