Sustainability in business
We are committed to becoming a carbon-neutral council by 2030 and local businesses will play a vital role if we are to meet our goal for the whole of North Northamptonshire to reach Net Zero emissions by 2050.
Tips to help your business be more sustainable:
-
Find out your carbon footprint - knowing this provides you with a baseline for measuring where improvements are needed. The Carbon Trust provides free resources to help businesses calculate and understand their carbon footprint
-
Business Travel - consider offering sustainable travel options for staff such as a Cycle to Work or lift share scheme
-
Monitor waste in the workplace and raise awareness of the 10 Rs of the circular economy
-
Consider joining a sustainability accreditation organisation or seek guidance from Investors in the Environment
-
Encourage staff to learn more about climate change and sustainability by taking an online course The Open University and Future Learn offer a variety of free courses
-
If your business has surplus food, consider joining Too Good to Go, an app that helps consumers locate discounted food that would otherwise be thrown out. This initiative helps cut down on food waste, which is responsible for 10% of greenhouse gas emissions
-
Compost food waste from your kitchens and canteens, recycle electronic waste responsibly and consider providing a battery recycling bin for customers to use
-
Adopt sustainable energy practices such as generating your own renewable energy to power your buildings or buying your energy from 100% renewable sources
