SEND Support Service - Courses for parents and carers

We offer a range of virtual and face-to-face courses and workshops to help parents understand and support their child's Special Educational Need (SEN). These occur from September to July each year.

  • understand more about difficulties surrounding food and autism

The course is designed to help you:

  • gain a basic understanding of sensory processing
  • consider how sensory processing relates to your child
  • understand some sensory supporting strategies

Understanding social communication difficulties and autism for children (8 to 19 years)

This 6 week workshop is for parents and carers of children with social communication difficulties and autism.

You must attend all 6 sessions to get the best out of this workshop.

Sessions will enable you to develop a range of support strategies for your child.

Understand how social communication difficulties affect toilet challenges

What the course will include

The course will cover:

  • the sequencing of toileting
  • strategies to try and bridge the child's gaps or sticking points (including sensory)
  • show ways to move the sequence on from the child's starting point

Understand how autism presents in girls

What the course will include

The course will cover:

  • contrasts in autism presentation between boys and girls
  • considering girls autistic behaviours
  • exploring strategies for techniques and support

Support with matters relating to puberty for children with a SEND and autism presentation

What the course will include

Topics include:

  • physical changes
  • personal care
  • examples of visual supports to aid understanding

For parents or carers of children with social communication difficulties and Autism who are or have been supported by the North Northants SEND Support Service Early Years Portage team

This includes the attendees of the Butterflies, Ladybirds and Penguins SEND groups.

What the course will include:

  • four virtual presentations
  • a live Speech and Language Therapy session
  • opportunity to ask an Early Years Portage worker any questions

Virtual
The virtual presentations are a new way for us as a team to support families. Once you have received the presentations, you can listen to the slides at a time convenient for you.

Presentations will be emailed to you via egress, this is a time limited email. If the email is not opened for 30 days, the presentation will be unavailable to view and you will need to wait until the next course date to sign up again.

All courses and workshops will be arranged subject to demand. If there are insufficient numbers to make any course viable, the event may be cancelled, and you will be informed in advance of the start date.
