SEND Support Service - Courses for parents and carers

We offer a range of virtual and face-to-face courses and workshops to help parents understand and support their child's Special Educational Need (SEN). These occur from September to July each year.

Thursday 16 May to Thursday 23 May - Understand how social communication difficulties affect anger

Type of course

Virtual

Length of course

2 sessions lasting 90 minutes, over 2 weeks.

Time slot available

6pm to 8pm

What the course will include

Learn how social communication difficulties affect anger.

It will cover how to:

  • evaluate behaviours
  • teach relaxation techniques
  • teach your child to understand what anger is and other different emotions
  • communicate emotions

It will also look at creating individualised plans, specific to your child’s needs.

Monday 1 July and Monday 8 July - Support with anxiety in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Type of course

Virtual.

Length of course

2 sessions lasting 90 minutes, over 2 weeks.

Time slot available

10am to 12pm

What the course will include

Support with anxiety in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The course aims to improve your confidence in recognising and managing your child’s anxiety.

We will help you to:

  • make an action plan
  • look at different strategies appropriate for your child

We will look at ways that you can introduce these at home.

Thursday 11 July - Understand the difficulties surrounding food and ASD

Type of course

Virtual or face-to-face workshop.

Length of course

2 sessions lasting 90 minutes, over 2 weeks.

What the course will include

The workshop aims to help you:

  • understand more about difficulties surrounding food and ASD
  • explore strategies and visual resources to support overcoming food and eating difficulties
  • create bespoke resources to support positive change

Tuesday 12 December and Thursday 14 March - Support with discussing matters relating to puberty

Type of course

Individual face to face consultation appointments in Kettering (Appointments in G01), select your time slot via the different tickets available, these appointments are for parents only.

  • 9:30am to 10:30am
  • 10:30am to 11:30am
  • 11:30am to 12:30pm
  • 1pm to 2pm
  • 2pm to 3pm
  • 3pm to 4pm

What the course will include

Puberty and adolescence can be challenging times for young people and for those who care for them. In this session, we will share specific strategies to support challenges related to puberty.

Topics covered include:

  • physical changes
  • personal care
  • examples of visual supports to aid understanding

Please note the content is not suitable for children or young people.

Wednesday 8 November, Wednesday 15 November, Wednesday 7 February and Wednesday 14 February - Gain a basic understanding of sensory processing

Type of course

Virtual

Length of course

Two 90-minute sessions.

What the course will include

The workshop is designed to help you:

  • gain a basic understanding of sensory processing
  • consider how sensory processing relates to you and your child
  • understand the formula of sensory circuits and how to set one up

Thursday 14 September to Thursday 19 October and Wednesday 8 May to Wednesday 12 June - Understanding social communication difficulties and / or autism

These 6 week courses are for parents and carers of children with social communication difficulties and / or autism.

You must attend all 6 sessions in order to get the best out of this workshop.

Each session is 90 minutes long and is held virtually once a week for 6 weeks. Sessions will enable you to develop a range of support strategies for your child.

For parents and carers of children and young people with social and communication difficulties and / or autism aged 8 to 19.

Thursday 13 June - Supporting children with toileting issues

Type of course

Virtual.

Length of course

A single 90-minute workshop with an option for an individual follow-up consultation appointment.

Time slot available

10am to 12pm

What the course will include

The workshop will cover:

  • the sequencing of toileting
  • strategies to try and bridge the child's gaps or sticking points (including sensory)
  • show ways to move the sequence on from the child's starting point

We cover the sequence from start to finish, break it down into each step and discuss the barriers that might be encountered related to that step and ways to try and overcome them.
