Personal travel budget

A Personal Travel Budget (PTB) is funding provided by North Northamptonshire Council to support you to arrange travel for your child or young person to attend school, college or another educational setting.

Eligibility

You are on this page as a member of the Travel to School team has confirmed that your child is eligible for a Personal Travel Budget, and you have agreed to a trial.  Please provide personal details in the form below, so we can set up your PTB.

How a PTB works

A PTB gives you the flexibility to make travel arrangements that best meet your child's and your family’s needs, rather than having transport arranged by the Council.

You can use your budget in a way that works for your family while ensuring your child can travel safely and reliably to and from their educational setting.

You may use your PTB to:

  • drive your child yourself
  • share transport with another family
  • ask a family member or friend to help with transport
  • support independent travel where appropriate
  • arrange another suitable way for your child to travel safely to their educational setting
  • Organise travel around activities such as breakfast and afterschool clubs

If you accept a PTB, you are responsible for arranging suitable travel for your child.

You must:

  • arrange safe, reliable and appropriate transport
  • ensure your child's individual needs are considered
  • ensure appropriate supervision is available where needed
  • make sure any vehicles used are safe, roadworthy and insured
  • inform the Council of any significant changes that may affect travel arrangements

PTB payments are made in advance before the start of each school-term:

Payments are subject to:

  • your child’s eligibility remaining unchanged
  • your child continuing to attend the agreed educational setting and the agreed timetable (full or part-time)
  • the PTB agreement remaining in place
  • all required information being provided

If a PTB starts during a school term, a part-term payment may be made.

Please tell us as soon as possible if there are changes to:

  • your child's needs
  • your home address
  • your child's school or educational setting
  • travel arrangements
  • safety concerns
  • bank account details
  • parental responsibility or care arrangements

Changes may affect your PTB and could result in the arrangement being reviewed. Please email us at [email protected] as soon as you are aware of any changes.

The PTB is intended to support regular attendance at school or college.

If your child’s attendance becomes a concern, we may review the arrangement while taking account of any valid reasons for absence.

We regularly review PTB arrangements to ensure they continue to meet your child's needs.

We may change or end a PTB if:

  • the arrangement is no longer suitable
  • circumstances change significantly
  • safety or safeguarding concerns arise
  • your child's needs change
  • your child’s attendance has decreased

Where appropriate, alternative transport arrangements will be considered.

If a PTB payment is made incorrectly, or if circumstances change and the Council is not informed, we may ask for any overpayment to be repaid.

If you take up the trial, you will need to give NNC notice. Please be aware that it can take up to 6 weeks for the Council to recommission travel services for your child. You will be responsible for getting your child to school during this period.

Year 12 and 13 Students

Parent contribution will be split over the 3 annual payments for example, £965 divided by 3 = £321.67 reduction to payment per term.
