Training and resources on prevent duty

Education providers should ensure:

  • staff receive training to identify children and young people at risk of being drawn into terrorism and challenge extremist ideas.
  • Designated safeguarding leads (DSL) undergo Prevent awareness training and offer guidance and support to staff.
  • Senior leaders and DSL staff attend Prevent awareness training to share knowledge with staff, governors, and volunteers.

Training

ACT for Education: Take the Action Counters Terrorism (ACT) for Education e-learning, tailored for all staff in educational settings. This course teaches how to identify security vulnerabilities, recognize suspicious activity, and respond during incidents.

Home Office Prevent Duty Training: Gain knowledge about the Prevent Duty, forms of extremism and terrorism, risk around radicalization, making informed Prevent referrals, and available interventions and support.

Education and Training Foundation Modules: Access online training modules to support staff, leaders, managers, and governors/Board members in understanding their roles and responsibilities under the Prevent Duty. Subscribe to their newsletter for updates.

Northamptonshire Safeguarding Children Partnership E-Learning: Enroll in the Radicalization and Extremism program to recognize various forms of radicalization and extremism and understand the steps and organizations to contact if radicalization is suspected.

Resources

Educate Against Hate is a government website that supports school and college teachers and leaders in safeguarding students from radicalization and extremism. The platform offers free information and resources to help staff identify and address risks, as well as build resilience to radicalization.

London Grid for Learning provides useful resources and training on Prevent.

The Deliberative Classroom project, by the Association for Citizenship Teaching, supports KS3 teachers in leading knowledge-based discussions and debates with students on sensitive issues. It focuses on teaching topics related to fundamental British values, such as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect for different faiths and beliefs, as well as equality and citizenship.
