Shape the future of local democracy in North Northamptonshire

North Northamptonshire Council has launched a consultation looking at community governance in the area.

A Community Governance Review is a process which provides an opportunity to review, create and make changes to the governance arrangements for town and parish councils and parish areas.

This consultation is the first in a two-stage process and residents and stakeholders are asked for submissions on areas including creating new parish areas, merging parish areas and the number of councillors on an existing council (but not North Northamptonshire Council).

North Northamptonshire Council is responsible for carrying out Community Governance Reviews in its area. A recent review of electoral arrangements for North Northamptonshire Council resulted in some changes to parish ward boundaries. This, along with significant housing developments has led to some boundaries becoming inconsistent with new developments spanning existing parish boundaries. These factors have resulted in the need to conduct a Community Governance Review now.

Areas like North Northamptonshire are continuously growing with communities changing as new housing developments are built.

With this in mind, it is important that we take the time to review the existing arrangements and look at changes, where necessary. Following the first consultation, North Northamptonshire Council will consider initial submissions, and draft recommendations will be reported to the council’s Democracy and Standards Committee. A second consultation, which will set out draft recommendations, will then be published for further comments.
