With the nights drawing in and the colder days ahead, North Northamptonshire Council’s winter fleet are now on standby to treat the precautionary winter routes across the authority.

The winter season runs from the start of November to mid-April with the winter fleet covering just over 830km of precautionary winter routes – representing approximately 44% of the roads in North Northamptonshire.

In adverse weather conditions, an additional 256km would be treated to help maintain access and minimise disruption.  The council has storage of 4,500 tonnes of salt for the 2026/27 season. There are 657 grit bins across North Northamptonshire which are filled for use on public roads and footpaths.

Residents can also request that an empty grit bin is filled up via the council’s website so it can be refilled as quickly as possible.

After a summer full of hot weather, we are now gearing up for winter and doing all we can to keep drivers across North Northants moving - whenever freezing temperatures are forecast.

Keeping our roads and key routes safe and accessible is a priority, and our dedicated crews work incredibly hard to help reduce the impact of ice and snow on residents, businesses and visitors.

We would also encourage residents to plan ahead for winter journeys, take extra care during severe weather and report empty grit bins through the council’s website so they can be filled up as quickly as possible.
