In line with guidance from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, North Northamptonshire Council has published its latest Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory for 2024/25.

The report demonstrates a 4% reduction in emissions compared to 2023/24 and an 8.2 % reduction against the baseline. This illustrates a good rate of progress in terms of meeting year-on-year reduction targets.

To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, North Northamptonshire Council must reduce emissions by 3.6% annually.

Key achievements over the past year include:

  • Solar PV panels installed at Rushden Splash Leisure Pool are projected to yield a financial savings of £26,000 in electricity costs and save 25.7 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) annually.
  • LED light conversion and new pool cover at the Corby International Pool are projected to yield a revenue savings of £8,900 in electricity costs and save 10.3 tCO2e annually.
  • Street lighting upgrade programme has converted over 20,000 lighting units to LED, saving over 150 tCO2e.
  • Replacement of old multi-functional device printers to more energy efficient models has resulted in a carbon savings of 4.3 tCO2e and an annual revenue savings of £5,000.

However, the council also acknowledge that there continues to be challenges in reducing its annual emissions - something which was reflected in the decision to revise North Northamptonshire Council’s carbon neutral targets to 2050 earlier this year.

We have always said we will be realistic when it comes to tackling the council’s greenhouse gas emissions and this report demonstrates that it is a careful balancing act. In some areas we have seen considerable decreases, but in other areas we know there is more to be done and expect to see other changes as the council moves forward.

Moving to a target of 2050 gave us more breathing space to deliver our Carbon Management Plan, allows us to think seriously about our greenhouse gas emissions and what we can do to reduce emissions whilst continuing to offer high levels of services for residents.
Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council
