New Greenway ramp officially opened in Rushden
Walking and cycling15 December 2025

A much-anticipated access ramp connecting Washbrook Road to the Greenway in Rushden was officially opened in November, marking a significant milestone for active travel and community connectivity in the area.
The ramp, which was identified as a priority in Rushden’s Neighbourhood Plan and the Out to Water, Into History project (funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund), has been made possible thanks to funding from Section 106 contributions from Rushden Lakes and North Northamptonshire Council’s Capital Programme.
The new ramp provides a safe route down from Washbrook Road at Midland Road to the Greenway, connecting residents who previously had to go out of their way to access the popular walking and cycling route. It is estimated that approximately 600 more households within a five-minute walk will now be able to directly use the Greenway to reach Rushden High Street, head towards Crown Park, or travel further afield.
In a touching tribute, the ramp has been dedicated to the memory of former Greenway Board Chairman, Cllr Sarah Peacock. Sarah’s vision inspired the creation of the Greenway which now links Rushden with the wider Nene Valley. Her unwavering determination to create a safe green network is now a lasting legacy.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by dignitaries from North Northamptonshire Council and Rushden Town Council, alongside Greenway Champions and members of the local community. Sarah’s family were also in attendance, reflecting the personal significance of the occasion.
Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council and Rushden Mayor, Cllr Gill Mercer officially cut the ribbon, marking the ramp’s official opening.
Local residents have already begun using the ramp, with positive feedback from families and Greenway users. Four-year-old Henry, who rode down the ramp on his bike for the first time, said: “I like it on my bike.” His mum, Jessica Pullen, added: “It saves having to go alongside the busy road to the High Street.” Another resident commented: “It’s so much easier now, no traffic, quieter, and much safer.”
Being here today and seeing families already using the ramp shows just how important this project is for Rushden. It will make everyday journeys easier and safer, giving residents a better way to reach the High Street, Crown Park and beyond. This is exactly the kind of improvement that strengthens our communities and encourages more people to enjoy the Greenway.Cllr Greg Wilcox, Executive Member for Communities at North Northamptonshire Council.
It’s fantastic to be here for the opening and to see the difference this ramp will make. It supports our commitment to active travel, sustainability and wellbeing, and I’m proud that we’ve been able to help deliver something that benefits so many households.Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council
Sarah was a good friend and a pioneer of the Greenway as far back as my political career stretches, her vision for a safe green network continues to inspire projects like this. Seeing local families enjoying the Greenway today really brings that vision to life.
I have been pushing for a safe exit from the Greenway at this point for many years, so it is a great pleasure to be part of the opening of this long-awaited ramp. It’s going to make everyday journeys easier and safer for so many people.Cllr Gill Mercer, Mayor of Rushden.
The tribute to Sarah Peacock is a fitting recognition of her dedication to our town and its residents. I know this will be a well-used and well-loved part of the Greenway for years to come.
North Northamptonshire Council was recently presented with a Special Recognition at the Wellingborough & North Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce Business Awards, highlighting the benefits of the Greenway Project for residents and businesses.
The Council will continue to expand the Greenway network, improve accessibility and safety along existing routes. Smaller upgrades, better signage and improved surfaces will make the Greenway even more inclusive, while new sections will link communities with limited safe walking or cycling options.
More information on walking and wheeling routes and other projects is available on the Greenway page.
