Representatives from North Northamptonshire gathered on Friday with partners and guests at Tresham College in Corby to celebrate the official opening of a new cycle route connecting the station with the town centre.

The new route is one of the four projects which fall under the Corby Towns Fund, and covers Elizabeth Street, Oakley Road and Station Road. It was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony at an event which also saw students from Tresham College demonstrating the new route.

Benefits of the new scheme include:

  • Improvements to pedestrian and cycling facilities
  • New and improved crossings for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Segregated cycleways and footways facilities where possible
  • Resurfacing to footways and carriageways
  • Improvements to drainage and lighting
  • New e-scooter bank, replacement of old bus and taxi shelters and bins on Elizabeth Street, along with replacement of old bus shelters, new benches and bins on Oakley Road
  • Subway infill along Oakley Road to improve accessibility and reduce anti-social behaviour
  • Retaining wall removed along Oakley Road with a new wall installed to provide space for the cycle path
  • Off Oakley Road, improvements to East Avenue including the footpath between East Avenue and Wheatley Avenue

In early 2026, it is anticipated that new CCTV cameras will be installed (subject to the results of planning permissions) to further improve public safety, following feedback received during the public consultation in 2023. 275 trees will also be planted across the wider Corby area from January.

It was great to come together with partners and stakeholders to celebrate this excellent project. Whilst engaging with students at Tresham College, it is gratifying to see enthused usage and indeed the new paths are proving beneficial, with pupils using the cycle route to travel to and from the College.

Projects like this bring enormous benefits to the local area and away from the main cycle path, the wider scheme has also seen roads resurfaced, an underpass filled into to reduce anti-social behaviour and provide safer routes, together with the addition of new benches, bins and shelters, the area is helping to foster healthier lifestyle choices in more accessible pathways for walking and cycling.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank residents and road users for their patience whilst works have been undertaken and encourage residents to continue to use the new route.
Cllr Jan O’Hara, the council’s Executive Member for Planning and Economic Growth
This is a vital link for residents and visitors alike, including students from Tresham College. It’s great to see people already using the route, and we hope that usage continues to grow.

But this project is about more than just a cycle path. We’ve made significant improvements to the local area, and by early 2026 we’ll be adding the finishing touches - including new CCTV cameras and the planting of 275 trees across Corby, creating a safer and greener environment for everyone.
Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council
We are proud to have delivered this important project while achieving enhanced sustainability outcomes. The new Corby Station Link provides a safe, accessible route for cyclists and pedestrians, enhances the local urban environment, and encourages healthier, greener travel choices. By incorporating innovative solutions such as expanded polystyrene (EPS) blocks, pre-cast Redi-Rock retaining walls, and glass reinforced plastic (GRP) sign substrates, this project demonstrates how collaboration and innovation can deliver infrastructure that benefits communities today and supports a more sustainable future.Kier General Manager, Allan Rigby
This new cycle route is a fantastic addition for Corby and for our college community. It provides our students, staff, and local residents with a safer, greener way to travel, encouraging healthier lifestyles and reducing reliance on cars.

At Tresham College, we’re committed to supporting sustainable travel, and this link between the station and town centre makes it easier for everyone to access education and employment while contributing to a cleaner, more connected Corby. We’re proud to see our students already embracing the route and demonstrating how these improvements can make a real difference to everyday journeys.
Shaun Cook, Principal of Tresham College
