Join the fight against fly-tipping and help keep North Northants tidy
Bins, recycling and street cleansing12 October 2026

North Northamptonshire Council is backing this year’s Fight Fly-tipping Fortnight and is encouraging residents to be careful when disposing of waste and to report any fly-tipping across the local area.
Fight Fly-tipping Fortnight is an annual, national campaign led by Keep Britain Tidy which this year runs from 12 - 25 October and the council is using the fortnight as an opportunity to remind residents of some key information which will help keep North Northants tidy, alongside the work completed by the council year-around.
Across the fortnight, the council’s Waste team will be visiting known fly-tipping hotspots, continuing to follow up on recent cases where evidence has been recovered from fly-tips and targeted work with businesses.
When disposing of waste, residents should ensure they are using an authorised waste carrier. If you are paying for someone to remove and dispose of your waste, you are still responsible and could face enforcement action if reasonable steps have not been taken to check who was handling it.
You should:
- Ask for a waste carrier registration number
- Check that the collector is authorised on the Environment Agency’s public register
- Keep a receipt or written record of the collection
If you spot fly-tipping, you should report it to North Northamptonshire Council with the following details:
- The date, time and exact location
- Vehicle registration, make, colour and direction of travel
- Description of the people involved
- Description of the waste being tipped
- Photos or videos - if it is safe to do so.
This information can be used to bring forward a prosecution against the people involved in the incident. You should not approach or confront anyone seen fly-tipping.
Fly-tipping is a selfish act that spoils our neighbourhoods and costs a significant amount of money to clear up.Cllr Chris McGiffen, Executive Member for Highways and Travel, at North Northamptonshire Council
Fight Fly-Tipping Fortnight is an important opportunity to remind everyone that we all have a role to play in tackling this issue - all year around. Before paying someone to take away your waste, make sure they are authorised to do so, keep a record of who collected it and ask for a receipt.
We also encourage residents to report fly-tipping and any suspicious activity they witness. Information provided by the residents can be invaluable in helping our teams investigate incidents and take action against those responsible.
When I am out about across North Northants, whether it be in our wonderful countryside or in our towns and villages, the sight of fly-tipped waste irritates me and I know residents feel the same. Fly-tipping costs each and every council taxpayer. We need your help to catch those who are responsible - please continue to work with us and report fly-tipping, but also do the necessary checks when using waste carriers.Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of the Council
