North Northamptonshire Council’s Executive will meet on 9 September to review its waste and recycling policies, ensuring they continue to deliver high-quality services for residents, remain aligned with national legislation, and are prepared to support future improvements.

Originally adopted in 2021, the policies have provided a strong foundation for consistent and reliable waste and recycling services across North Northamptonshire. They’ve helped set clear standards for both the Council and residents, supporting clean streets, responsible waste disposal, and effective enforcement against environmental crime.

The Executive will now consider the policies in full, assessing how well they continue to meet local needs and national requirements. As part of this review, minor updates are being proposed to reflect recent national guidance, including the Government’s Simpler Recycling initiative.

Importantly, residents will not see any changes to their current bin collections.

The policies being considered are:

  • North Northamptonshire’s Waste and Recycling Policy
  • Strategy for Tackling Litter and Fly-tipping
  • Environmental Crime Enforcement Policy
This review is about making sure the policies continue to serve our communities well by keeping them current and prepared for future needs.

Waste and recycling are central to our Big 50 vision – creating places that are proud, prosperous and proactive. These policies help us maintain clean streets, support responsible waste disposal, and strengthen our ability to tackle fly-tipping and environmental crime, targeting hotspot areas and holding offenders to account.

By keeping these policies strong, we’re helping protect our environment and ensure our communities remain places we can all be proud to live in.
Councillor Ken Harrington, Executive Member for Assets, Waste and Environmental Services.
We must review these policies, fly-tipping is just one example of why they matter. Nothing angers me more than fly-tipping, and I know many residents who respect the countryside, and their communities feel the same.

Large Fly-tipping incidents cost local authorities across England over £13 million a year. I’d much rather see taxpayers’ money spent on improving the services we provide and delivering on residents’ priorities than continually clearing up illegal waste.
Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council.

Through setting clear standards and expectations, the policies help reduce confusion, improve efficiency, and deliver better value for money. They also support the Council’s commitment to a greener, more sustainable environment and modern public services that residents can rely on. In addition, the policies promote wider environmental goals by encouraging recycling and empowering residents to play an active role in protecting their local surroundings.

Following consideration by the Executive on 9 September, the policy documents will be updated and republished on the website.
