Civic Protocol
Community governance review consultation
From Friday 12 December 2025 to Friday 20 February 2026, we are conducting a community governance review on how we review, create and make changes to the ways town and parish councils and parish areas are organised.
Have you say in the community governance review consultation
The Civic Protocol is a countywide approach to the civic function and celebrates Northamptonshire's rich history and civic tradition.
It outlines the roles and responsibilities of various civic figures including:
- Lord-Lieutenant
- High Sheriff of Northamptonshire
- Chairs of North and West Northamptonshire Councils
- Mayors and Chairs of town and parish councils
It gives us a consistent approach to civic matters, such as the order of precedence at civic engagements and events.
Additionally, it aims to:
- support local businesses and charities
- promote the visitor economy
- recognise deserving individuals and organisations within the county
