Support following a critical incident
Following a traumatic or critical incident, the Educational Psychology Service (EPS) provides support and advice to settings such as schools, academies and early years providers in the immediate aftermath.
This may include incidents such as the death or serious injury of a pupil, parent, carer, member of staff, or another member of the setting’s community.
How we can help
We can support settings by:
- providing guidance on promoting psychological wellbeing and helping the school community recover after an incident
- acting as a critical friend to senior leaders as they plan communications and coordinate support for pupils, families and staff
- identifying and signposting relevant resources, including EPS materials and guidance from partner organisations, to support the setting's response and recovery through its emergency plans and procedures
- providing practical advice and psychoeducational information, both verbally and in writing, for staff to use and share with children, young people, parents and carers
- offering direct support to staff who have been particularly affected by the incident, helping them manage immediate emotional responses, develop coping strategies and access appropriate sources of support within and beyond the workplace
