Careers in our Educational Psychology service

Mike Simons
I want to recruit the very best people who can use psychology to help our children and young people in North Northamptonshire. As I begin my 30th year working for this great service (and its predecessor), it is a privilege to lead it and further embed our longstanding mutually supportive, friendly and collegiate culture - where opportunities abound and good ideas are always welcomedMike Simons - Principal Educational Psychologist

Our service

The important contribution our Educational Psychology team makes to key outcomes for children and young people is well-recognised in North Northamptonshire and we have agreed a significant expansion of the service - offering a range of stimulating work and opportunity for career progression.

We will be our best so every child can be their best - to make a real difference to the life of each one.

We are committed to inclusive practice and co-production.

We make our decisions to ensure the child is at the centre of all we do.
Our simple vision

We are a consultation-based, solution-oriented, and child-centred service rooted in Positive Psychology.

We provide core services including:

  • early years support
  • critical incident support
  • statutory input for the council
  • commissioned work at the individual, group and organisational level to schools and other settings (including social care and public health)

Our service has enhanced posts for leading programmes:

  • Targeted Mental Health in Schools (TaMHS)
  • Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA)
  • Mediated Learning Support Assistant (MeLSA)

We promote emotional wellbeing for staff working in schools through our training, coaching and supervision offer.

To provide up to date evidence-based support to our clients, an on-going comprehensive CPD programme is available for all members of the service. Recent CPD has included Neuro-Affirmative practice, MeLSA, and Dynamic Assessment, as we strive to work more inclusively and effectively with a strong anti-racist approach.

Our offer

We support the development of new staff to our profession by providing placements for Trainee Educational Psychologists, who almost always then go on to take-up employment with us post qualification.

We currently host two Y2 Trainee Educational Psychologists and two Y3 Trainee Educational Psychologists who maintain full membership of our service. All qualified Educational Psychologists (EP) carry a generic EP workload as well as any additional responsibility.

We offer fantastic benefits and a great place to work, including agile working, great staff benefits and salary sacrifice schemes for cars, annual leave and cycling to work, as well as an excellent pension scheme.
