King's Wood Local Nature Reserve

In medieval times, Rockingham Forest covered much of north-east Northamptonshire - King’s Wood is a small fragment of this once great forest.

This 32-hectare ancient woodland was managed for centuries as Crown Coppice, providing shelter for the King’s deer as well as wood for fuel. With the expansion of Corby, it became the first Local Nature Reserve (LNR) in Northamptonshire.

King’s Wood is a treasured oasis of biodiversity, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of wildlife and traditional woodland management practices that have shaped its character for centuries.

Location

Wildlife of King’s Wood

As you wander the paths of King’s Wood, listen for the drumming of green and great woodpeckers—master excavators that thrive among the ancient trees. Watch the agile treecreeper spiralling up trunks in search of insects, and keep an eye out for the swift, silent glide of a sparrowhawk hunting through the canopy. This woodland is alive with creatures that depend on its diverse habitats, from the high tree canopy to the forest floor.

Flora of the woodland

In spring, King’s Wood transforms into a vibrant carpet of wildflowers. Enjoy the nodding heads of bluebells, the sunny yellow of primroses, the delicate white blooms of wood anemones, and the rare beauty of wild orchids. These plants thrive in the dappled light created by our traditional management practices, ensuring the wood remains rich in flora for generations to come.

Traditional coppicing and sustainable use

King’s Wood is managed using the centuries-old practice of coppicing—a method of cutting back trees to ground level, encouraging new shoots to grow. This creates a sustainable cycle of regeneration, benefiting wildlife and maintaining a dynamic woodland structure. The firewood, stakes, and binders collected during coppicing are put to good use, supporting local crafts and generating income that goes directly back into managing the reserve. Every stake, binder, and log fuels this self-sustaining cycle, helping to preserve the woodland for both wildlife and the community.
