Suspension of parking bays

We can consider applications to suspend or partly suspend bays, spaces or restrictions for specific reasons including:

  • building works or skips
  • domestic removals
  • weddings
  • funerals
  • special events
  • roadworks
  • Helping the flow and movement of traffic

Parking suspensions can only be issued for areas where parking restrictions apply.

The area is restricted to allow the activity to be carried out. Suspension signs are put up to warn motorists of the duration and reason for the suspension.

It is an offence to park within a suspended bay and penalty notices can be issued.

Areas can also be suspended by Northamptonshire Police without prior warning for reasons including public safety and security for a maximum of 7 days.

Apply

We aim to process your application within 3 working days and will confirm in writing if it has been approved, along with the total charge.

You will then need to make payment by credit or debit card by calling our Customer Services team no later than 5 working days before your suspension start date.

Once payment has been received, proof of payment will be provided with a full breakdown of the cost.

Applications must be written using the appropriate application form and should be received no later than 10 working days before the required start date. In exceptional circumstances, the council may accept emergency applications up to 5 working days prior to the suspension date.

We are unable to process incomplete applications or those received within 5 working days of the proposed suspension date.

We cannot suspend parking on Sundays and Bank Holidays, unless it is for a Special Event or Utility Works, for which appropriate permissions have been granted.

The Suspension fee on the first day, per 5 metre space (one car space) is £25 and £10 per 5 metre space, each additional consecutive day.

Amendments will only be agreed on the basis that the notification period can still be achieved.

An amendment fee is required if a request is received after the notification period has started, charged at £10 per 5 metre space.

Payment must be made in advance of the suspension without exception and must be received a minimum of 5 clear working days before you need the suspension to start.

Refunds will not be processed for applications beyond the approval stage.

The day of submission is not included in the notice period, irrespective of whether it was received prior to midday. We do not count Saturdays, Sundays or Bank or Public Holidays as notification days, so please take this into account when arranging a suspension.

Applications to extend an existing suspension may be made by email/letter giving a minimum of 3 clear working days prior to the expiry of the initial suspension period. Failure to give the appropriate notice will result in a new application form needing to be submitted and the 1st day fee payable.

As it is an offence to park in a suspended bay or space, any vehicles seen will be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice.

Traffic cones will only be arranged to mark out the suspended bays on the first day of the suspension. Our traffic cones will be scheduled to be picked up the same day at any given time. Once collected, it is the responsibility of the applicant to arrange sufficient barricades or cones for the works scheduled.

All signs and covers will be removed upon expiry of the suspension.
