North Northamptonshire Council is today issuing an update on works to demolish a building in the centre of Kettering.

A High Court order had previously required Michigan Construction Ltd to demolish the unsafe multi-storey building in Jobs Yard, Kettering. Owner Mr Fielding did not act on this, so the council made an application to the court to enable the council to secure the site and demolish the building.

Since the council were issued with the warrant to access the site in July, it has been secured, surveyed and the council have worked with a demolition contractor on the most suitable method of demolition.

The building has also been stripped of all internal fixtures and fittings to enable this work to take place.

A demolition notice has now been submitted to the council’s Building Control team, the Health and Safety Executive have been notified, and the council are working with the utility companies to disconnect the gas and electrical supply.

In order to demolish the building, the council must submit a planning application with a site notice posted at the site - this will include an estimated start date. This date is only an indication of when works may start and is not definite at this stage.

We appreciate the continued, local concern around this building in the centre of Kettering.

This is an extremely complex case, given the location and size of the building, and we are working closely with our contractor to ensure that the work to demolish the building is completed as quickly as possible. Once the building is demolished, we will then be able to re-open the road.
Cllr Kirk Harrison, the council’s Executive Member for Regulatory Services
I am pleased that we are at the next phase of this complex issue and are in a position where we are able to apply for planning permission to demolish this unsafe eyesore from the centre of Kettering.Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of the Council
