Smokers in North Northamptonshire are being directed to stop smoking services on No Smoking Day and encouraged to take their first steps to recovery.

This year's National awareness 'No Smoking Day' falls on Wednesday 12 March, with a central focus on the ‘steps people can take to take their life back.’

With up to two in three long-term smokers dying from smoking and causing 64,000 deaths in England each year, No Smoking Day remains important, 41 years on from its launch.

In North Northamptonshire, around 14.8% of adults smoke, having a significant impact on their physical and brain health, as well as their wealth. Between 2023 and 2024, 1507 people engaged in the Stop Smoking Service and 929 successfully quit.

The Stop Smoking Service offers up to 12 weeks of free support and advisors will help you to develop a quit plan with e-cigarettes and nicotine replacement therapy sent straight to your door.

They can also offer face-to-face appointments in Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough.

The free service includes:

  • a dedicated stop smoking service, providing up to 12 weeks of free behavioural support
  • tips and advice on how to stop smoking
  • face to face or telephone appointments
  • appointments available Monday to Friday across North Northamptonshire
  • a free course of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) which may include an e-cigarette starter kit and 12-week supply of e-liquid

Complete our online form and we'll get back to you as soon as we can - our team will usually be able to get an appointment for you within two to four weeks.

With the help of the free service in North Northamptonshire smokers will be three times more likely to quit.

Quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your health, at any age, and the benefits begin immediately. After eight hours your oxygen levels recover and the harmful carbon monoxide level in your blood will have reduced by half. After 48 hours all carbon monoxide will have been flushed out, your lungs will clear out mucus and your sense of taste and smell improve.

After two to twelve weeks, your blood will be pumping through to your heart and muscles much better because your circulation will have significantly improved. It is never too late to quit.

Stopping smoking is also one of the best things people can do to save money to spend on other things. The average smoker annually spends around £2,338 (The economic impact of smoking - ASH). This works out to be £45 per week.

According to recent data, 95% of ex-smokers experience positive changes within just two weeks of quitting, including increased energy (45%), feeling healthier (42%), and improved breathing (42%).
