North Northamptonshire Council’s road safety team marked Road Safety week by delivering an interactive training session at the Creating Tomorrow College in Kettering. The college's brand-new campus supports young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) aged 18-25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) expanding access to employment-focused education in North Northamptonshire.

Fifteen students took part in the session, which was tailored to meet their diverse needs, including individuals with learning difficulties and those who are hard of hearing or deaf. A staff member signed throughout the session, ensuring full accessibility.

The training featured the My Pink Trainers presentation, exploring the financial realities of driving and sharing a powerful film about the consequences of risky driving. Students also engaged with the Batak reaction machine, testing their reaction times under normal conditions and while wearing “beer goggles” to simulate the effects of alcohol or fatigue. This hands-on activity highlighted how impairment can significantly slow reaction times.

Feedback from the college was overwhelmingly positive.

The session was highly engaging and tailored to the students’ needs, making it meaningful and relevant. Keith and Norman built a strong rapport, motivating students and delivering an emotive topic in a relatable and impactful way.Jemma Spurr, a staff member at Creating Tomorrow College
