R1 bus service refreshed following joint council investment
Buses and transport21 January 2026

The R1 bus service has been refreshed and improved by operator Bland’s following joint investment from Rutland County Council, Leicestershire County Council and North Northamptonshire Council through the Government’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).
The R1 bus route connects Melton Mowbray, Oakham, Uppingham and Corby. The funding has supported several improvements aimed at making the service more reliable, easier to use and better suited to local travel needs. The R1 now operates hourly in each direction, improving consistency and making the timetable simpler for passengers.
To support the enhanced timetable, the service is now operated using three buses instead of two, which sport a fresh new ‘Rutlander’ design, helping to improve reliability across the route. Passengers will also benefit from new roadside information at bus stops, providing clearer details about services and timetables.
Journey times to Melton have been improved, helping people travel more quickly into the town. This includes better access to Melton Market, as well as shops, services and employment opportunities.
During December, Bland’s hosted a number of events across Rutland and Leicestershire to launch the new design of the buses and let residents know about the improvements to the service. These were attended by local councillors and stakeholders, and gave residents an opportunity to find out more, ask questions and meet the drivers who will be keeping the service moving.
The improvements to the R1 service show what can be achieved when councils work together with operators to support local bus services. More frequent buses, clearer information and faster journeys will make the service more useful for residents and help encourage more people to choose the bus.Councillor Christine Wise, Portfolio Holder for Transport, Environment and Communities at Rutland County Council
We’re proud of the partnership that has delivered these improvements to the R1 service between Corby, Uppingham, Oakham and Melton Mowbray. This is about improving connectivity for our residents. Whether they’re travelling to work, college, or meeting friends and family, the service will better meet local needs and helps keep our communities connected.Councillor Chris McGiffen, Executive Member for Highways and Travel at North Northamptonshire Council
The councils involved continue to work together to use BSIP (Bus Service Improvement Plan) funding to support and improve local bus services, helping communities stay connected and supporting access to key destinations across the area.
