North Northants Council Leisure campaign offers something for everyone
Parks, sports and leisure23 January 2026

North Northamptonshire Council has launched a new campaign to inspire more residents to enjoy their local leisure facilities. The campaign highlights the wide range of year round activities available for all ages and abilities, with information shared across council websites, social media and leisure venues.
One of the activities being spotlighted through the campaign is walking sports, which is attracting an increasing number of participants and demonstrates the inclusive, modern options available across the council’s leisure programme.
Spotlight on Walking Sports
Walking sports are low‑impact, slower‑paced versions of sports such as football, cricket and netball and are designed to be welcoming and accessible.
Getting involved with walking sports means being part of a regular activity in a welcoming and positive environment. The programme has continued to grow in North Northants with an increasing number of participants, with some attending multiple sessions across different venues.
Because sessions are designed to be relaxed and friendly, and no previous experience is needed, Walking Sports are proving to be an accessible re-entry point into sport, proving popular with residents who have not taken part in football or structured physical activity since leaving school. Attendance is also on the increase from individuals with limited mobility as they value the low impact and non contact nature.
Feedback consistently highlights the positive impact on mental health and wellbeing, with participants reporting improvements in mood, confidence, and overall mental wellbeing.
Residents can find their nearest walking sports group and venue on the council's website.
There’s also a short and informative blog post - read ‘Step into the Game’ by the council’s Active Communities team who are welcoming new starters to join in.
I’m proud that North Northamptonshire Council offers a wide range of opportunities to support residents to feel stronger and healthier – and our walking sports sessions are a great example of this. Finding, or perhaps re discovering, an activity you enjoy is often the key to staying active and maintaining strength, health and mobility.Councillor Brian Benneyworth, Executive Member for Health and Leisure.
I know that our leisure colleagues ensure the sessions provide a welcoming space to meet new people and build social connections and this social element is a key motivator for many and encourages continued attendance. Importantly, the relaxed, non- competitive format also allows residents to engage at their own pace, making it particularly appealing to those who may feel excluded from traditional forms of sport.
We are blessed in North Northamptonshire with so many wonderful spaces, from our country parks and green areas to dedicated indoor and outdoor leisure facilities. All of these are valuable opportunities for residents to take time out of their busy lives to relax and recharge.Councillor Martin Griffiths, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council.
