North Northamptonshire Council proudly hosted its annual Active Communities Awards yesterday evening, Wednesday 19th November, at the iconic Sywell Aerodrome. The event brought together athletes, volunteers, clubs, and organisations to celebrate a year of outstanding achievements in physical activity, health, wellbeing, and sport.
The awards not only recognise sporting success at local, national, and international levels but also honour the incredible individuals and groups who work tirelessly to help residents get active and improve lives across North Northamptonshire.
Special guests included Kate Longhurst, former England footballer, and Kirsty Clarke, CEO of Northamptonshire FA, alongside a vibrant performance by SHAPE Dance, adding energy and inspiration to the evening.
These awards are a wonderful celebration of the sporting talent across North Northamptonshire. The awards reflect the incredible dedication and passion within our communities, from grassroots sport and community-based physical activities to elite athletes. They celebrate the power of movement and sport to bring people together, improve wellbeing, and create opportunities for everyone, regardless of age or ability. Community Organisation/Group Award | Winner: Rush 2 The Den
Rush 2 The Den is a multi-award-winning youth and family support organisation in Rushden. It offers inclusive programs for children aged 5–17, including youth clubs, outdoor adventures, life skills workshops, and sensory play for toddlers. The organisation also provides domestic abuse advocacy and tailored support for children with additional needs. Recognised with The King’s Award for Voluntary Service and Best Independent Youth Centre, Rush 2 The Den empowers young people and families through creativity, resilience, and community connection. Its commitment to accessibility ensures no child is turned away, making it a lifeline for many.
Community Activator Award | Winner: Richard Penman
Richard is a dedicated instructor at Active In Motion Wellbeing Centre, supporting individuals with long-term illnesses and disabilities. Over the past year, he has completed specialist training to better serve members with conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s, and MS. His personalised approach has helped over 900 members improve their physical and mental wellbeing. Richard’s impact is evident in testimonials, including one from a member who regained independence thanks to his guidance. He’s also leading the launch of a new Bungee Fitness initiative, with over 85 participants already signed up. His resilience, compassion, and commitment to continuous learning have made him a pillar of support in the community, fostering confidence, strength, and social connection among those he serves.
Young Community Champion Award | Winner: Evie Wheeler
Evie Wheeler has made a remarkable impact as a young leader at Rothwell Youth Club since joining in 2024. She actively encourages young people to participate in physical activities, especially those who are initially reluctant. Evie has led games, supported skate park coaching, and built strong, trusting relationships with her peers. Her enthusiasm and dedication have helped previously disengaged youth become more active and confident. Whether it’s table tennis, nerf battles, or scooter coaching, Evie ensures everyone finds something they enjoy. Her positivity and commitment have made her a role model and a valued member of the team.
Community Champion Award | Winner: Ken Murie
Ken is the heart of his local table tennis club, serving as President and much more. Over the past year, he has led weekly Bat and Chat sessions, providing daytime access to the sport for older adults and newcomers. Ken is often the first to arrive and last to leave, welcoming everyone with warmth and dedication. He maintains the club’s equipment, ensuring high standards without burdening the club’s finances. His support for younger players and beginners fosters an inclusive, encouraging environment. Ken’s behind-the-scenes work, cleaning, repairs, and communication, keeps the club running smoothly. His quiet commitment and tireless volunteering make him an invaluable asset to the community.
Primary School Sports Award | Winner: St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School and Nursery
St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School and Nursery has embedded sport and wellbeing into every aspect of school life. With daily sports clubs, a strong curriculum, and inclusive initiatives like the Walk and Talk Club, they ensure every child is active. Their sports crew leads internal competitions and promotes values like teamwork and respect. The school has achieved county-level success in multiple sports and continues to hold Platinum School Games status. Their holistic approach links sport to academic achievement and mental health, making them a standout nominee for their dedication to opportunity, inclusion, and excellence.
Secondary School Sports Award | Winner: Rushden Academy
Rushden Academy’s PE department has transformed student engagement through its innovative “ME in PE” curriculum and inclusive sports leadership programme. Over the past year, students have led primary school sports days, organised SEND games, and developed leadership skills through planning and delivery. The department’s focus on inclusivity and empowerment has created a culture of participation and pride. Their work has not only increased physical activity but also built confidence and community connections. Rushden Academy’s PE team exemplifies dedication to holistic student development through sport.
Community Club Award | Winner: Mawsley Youth Football Club
Mawsley Youth FC is a model of inclusive community sport, supporting 23 teams and over 90 volunteers. The club’s ethos centres on providing a positive, supportive environment for children to enjoy football and grow. In the past year, they’ve achieved county cup wins, top league placements, and expanded girls’ football with 9 teams and 144 players. Their Wildcats programme introduces girls aged 5–11 to football in a fun, non-competitive setting. The club also runs a boot bank, offers financial support, and partners with local businesses and schools. Mawsley Youth FC’s impact spans sport, education, and community development, making it a beacon of grassroots excellence.
Get Active Award | Winner: Catherine Hill
Catherine has shown remarkable determination in improving her health and mobility over the past year. After being diagnosed with degenerative back damage, she joined the Active in Motion gym and later the Northamptonshire Spring group. Through regular exercise, including seated sessions and walking around the boating lake, Catherine has significantly reduced her pain and increased her mobility. She completed her first parkrun in three years using a rollator and participated in the Superhero Tri as part of the celebrity team. Her efforts have also led to weight loss and reduced insulin use as a type 2 diabetic. Catherine’s commitment to staying active and trying new activities, such as water-based sessions, makes her an inspiring figure in her community.
Health And Wellbeing Initiative Award | Winner: Priors Hall Park Community Events
Urban & Civic’s community programme at Priors Hall Park delivers a diverse range of health and wellbeing activities for residents of all ages. Over the past year, they’ve hosted events like the Youth Games, Turn Up & Play sessions, wellbeing walks, buggy walks, and the Roman Ramble. They’ve also launched the Priors Hall Park Community App to promote local activities and walking routes. These initiatives encourage physical activity, social connection, and environmental engagement. By partnering with local services and offering all activities free of charge, Urban & Civic has created a sustainable, inclusive model that strengthens community bonds and promotes lifelong wellbeing.
Community Team Award | Winner: Wellingborough Town U13 Panthers
The Panthers began their journey in the 2024/25 season, offering boys a chance to be part of a team in a supportive and inclusive environment. With half the squad diagnosed with neurodiversity, the team has become a powerful example of how sport can foster belonging and personal growth. Coaches Steve, John, and Kyle have gone above and beyond, supporting players emotionally, socially, and developmentally. The team finished 11th out of 13, exceeding expectations and celebrated a standout 17–0 win. More importantly, the boys have grown in confidence, built friendships, and found a sense of identity through football. The Panthers demonstrate how sport can transform lives and create lasting impact within the community.
Young Sports Performer Award | Winner: Ethan Soppett-Moss
Ethan Soppett-Moss has had an exceptional year in competitive swimming. Representing Corby Amateur Swimming Club, he won gold in the 50m butterfly at the British Aquatic Championships and equalled the English record in the 50m fly. He also claimed junior and senior titles in multiple strokes at the East Midlands regionals and competed against Team GB Olympians at the A.P International. Ethan’s dedication and resilience, especially during his GCSE year, have made him a role model for young athletes. His involvement in community events, like The Gathering, highlights his commitment to inspiring others.
Disabled Sports Performer Award | Winner: Gary Cox
Gary Cox has had an outstanding year in quad wheelchair tennis, representing Team GB at the World Cup Team Cup in Antalya, Turkey, where he won a bronze medal in the Men’s Double Quad division. He also claimed victory at the Lexus Wheelchair Tennis National Final in December 2024, becoming the Quintet National Champion. Beyond his sporting achievements, Gary is a dedicated community ambassador, supporting disability clubs and helping launch the refurbished Swanspool Gardens Tennis Courts in Wellingborough. His commitment to both elite sport and grassroots engagement makes him a role model and a deserving nominee.
Sports Performer Award | Winner: Fabian Powell
Fabian Powell is a standout young athlete in UK athletics, currently ranked 5th nationally in the 200m and 17th in the 400m. Over the past year, he has earned medals at the Youth Development League Final, including gold in the 400m and 4x100m relay. Fabian represented Great Britain at the Mannheim International and was a reserve for the European U20 Championships 4x100m relay team, which posted the fastest qualifying time in Europe. He is part of the UKA World Futures Relay Program and the England Athletics Junior Talent Program. Beyond competition, Fabian supports local clubs Corby AC and Rugby & Northampton AC by assisting with event timing systems, inspiring younger athletes through his dedication and elite-level performance.
Outstanding Recognition Award | Winner: Simon Fairhall
Simon Fairhall has spent 14 years transforming Kings Cliffe Active into a thriving community facility. As Chair of Trustees, he secured over £750,000 in funding for projects including netball courts, a gym extension, a pump track, and expanded play equipment. Simon’s hands-on approach, from grant writing to gardening, has created a space that supports sport, wellbeing, and social connection. His leadership has fostered partnerships and inspired village-wide collaboration. Even after stepping down, Simon continues to volunteer and mentor other groups, leaving a legacy of resilience, inclusion, and community pride.
