North Northamptonshire Council has officially opened a new skatepark at Bassett’s Close Park in Wellingborough.

The new facilities replace a well-used and popular community asset that needed an update.

Planning permission for the new skatepark was approved in late 2024 with work starting in November 2025 and now representatives from North Northamptonshire Council have joined with partners and users of the skatepark to celebrate the new facilities.

As part of the skatepark works, new solar lighting around the skatepark and CCTV cameras to monitor the whole park have been installed.

This project also forms part of wider investment in Bassetts Park — including new outdoor gym equipment, expanded play areas, repairs to fencing, new surfacing, and general improvements across the park. All of these upgrades help make Bassetts Close Park a welcoming, active, and healthy space for the whole community.

The new skatepark is located further away from homes in a more visible, busier area of the park - reflecting feedback that has been gathered from residents throughout the project.

Other benefits of the new skatepark include:

  • Supporting vibrant healthy communities, just like other sports facilities
  • Physical activity opportunities for children and young people particularly those not involved in traditional team sports
  • A safe and challenging space for wheeled sports to participants to develop their skills
  • A safe alternative to “street skating” for all age groups
We know that the skateboarding community of Wellingborough have been keen to see the existing skate park replaced with new, modern facilities. So, it’s great to see that work has now been completed and the new skatepark can start to be used by residents of all ages.Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council.

The project is funded by contributions of S106 and capital monies. Teams from across the council including Environmental Health, Planning, and Safer Communities have worked on the project alongside Northamptonshire Police, Bendcrete Leisure, Wellingborough Skatepark Group.
